40 years and counting.

Forty years ago Continental Star F.C formerly Villa Star was formed; in a series of interviews to plot the progress made by the club we caught up with General Manager: Lincoln Moses MBE for a brief chat.

How does CSFC 2014 compare to the newly formed CSFC 1975?

Today CSFC is a charitable organisation dedicated to the social development of young people; engaging them through the use of healthy lifestyle activity programmes and associated public education projects. “All of our programmes tend to comprise of a physical activity component, including those geared to attract the special needs community.” Moses went on to say “The organisation’s focus has shifted in recent years to providing more comprehensive, holistic sustainable solutions, as it looks to help tackle critical social issues: offering the youth greater access to employment opportunities; improved child welfare… health and youth development.”

In 1975 CSFC was engaging a hand full of young people on a weekly basis in unstructured football; the primary objective being to play competitive football.  Contrast that with CSFC of today and Moses proudly states: “The organisation’s development programmes have reached more than 2,000 participants in the past 12 months, whilst working closely with Government / agencies, mentors, youth leaders, unemployed youth, associations, industry stakeholders, schools, universities and vulnerable communities.”

Continental Star Reserves v Fairfield Villa Reserves

Today saw Stars take on Fairfield Villa at home in a must win game if we wanted to keep our chances alive of winning the league.
We got out of the blocks very slow as we were second to every ball and not really competing with the opposition. Unfortunately we went 1 nil down from a great goal by the opposition, skipping past two players and rifling the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. This gave us the wake up call we needed and we were quick to respond. Within 5 minutes of us re starting the game Josh Nelson played a superb through ball to Devonte who finished well under pressure and got us our equaliser. We carried on applying pressure but went behind again from a set piece. A corner came in and a push on our keeper made him drop the ball and their attacker to put the ball into an empty net.
We went into the dressing room 2-1 down but knew we wasn’t out of the game!
With a strong team talk from Daniel & Deno we scored two quick fire goals in the second half. The first with Devonte dribbling past 2 players with his fast feet and passing the ball off to Nelson to take it out of his feet and unleash a 25 yard wonder strike into the back of the net! (Goal of the season contender?) The equaliser gave us confidence to carry on playing our attractive football and we got our rewards as Nelson fired another long ranger at the keeper only for him to parry it out and and Josh Robinson to follow up and cooly put it over the Fairfield keeper. As we had this 3-2 lead we didn’t look like throwing the game away and the scoreline flattered Fairfield as we missed late chances.
Final Score: Continental Star Reserves 3-2 Fairfield Villa Reserves.

Great 3 points for Stars. Hopefully we can carry our performance into the next game away to Brocton on the 7th Feb.

U13s too hot for snipers

Today was a tough game for the under 13s against top of the league Black Country Snipers.The first half was intense with us being more of the attacking team and creating more chances. Abu skipping past two players like they weren’t even there and slotting it away before the keeper could get there. Abu second came shortly after when Ramone played an inviting cross to find the boot of Abu on the volley. Second half was fast flowing with the opposition scoring first with a nicely placed goal. They soon brought it back to 2-2 when their striker shooting across the keeper getting a touch on it but too powerful for him to keep out. But we weren’t giving up we came back with Nathan running down the wing and picking out Ramone with a fantastic through ball for Ramone to smash home not letting the keeper save it. Great victory for the lads well played.

Football for Peace

Football for Peace is a sporting initiative that aims to:

  1. Provide opportunities for social contact across community boundaries
  2. Promote mutual understanding
  3. Engender in participants a desire for and commitment to peaceful coexistence
  4. Enhance sporting skills and technical knowledge.

Continental Star recently took part in a Football for Peace event held at The Sports Hub, Holford Drive, where a game of football took place with mixed gender teams; followed by a seminar.

Our last game before the Holidays, we were away to West Brom united.


We started the game with 9 players with illness and injuries the main reason for many absentees, although this was disappointing we were all in high sprits because we welcomed back Melanie Judd Was Griffiths!


We knew we had to be smart about our approach as the opposition would have a 2 player overload so we decided to play deep and stay compact only pressing when they entered our mid to defensive 3rd. We also decided that to limit our running, when we were in possession we would retain it and use the pace from our flanks to attack otherwise we would keep it.


After a very bright start we scored a well worked goal, Shiloh, picking up the ball out wide drove to the by-line and then floated a ball across the box for Abu to tap in back post. After this the boys decided to press a bit higher to force mistakes. From us pressing we manage to get another goal this time from Abu winning the ball in the wide area shooting from a tight angle, the keeper parried for Shiloh to tap home. Just before half time Hamzah twisted and turned clipped a ball through to Abu for him to chest and half volley into the corner.


At half time we changed our shape and talked about changing our set up to press more keeping a high line. The change in style was to force the opposition to play longer for us to sweep up with Our keeper Owen or our quick defenders to deal with.


The opposition came out with what looked like a ‘nothing to lose mentality’ and pressed like crazy, credit to us we managed it very well by retaining the ball making them work doubly hard to get the ball back.


Within five minutes we scored again, this time with Ramone driving to by line cutting the ball back for Hamzah to touch, chop, turn and fire home.


The opposition broke away after some good play to score arguably the goal of the game. We replied with Ramone picking up the ball from the halfway, racing through to finish beyond their goal keeper who could not do anything to save. 5 mins Before the end the opposition got a penalty and scored.


Last week we had a few things to work on and we did that in training which carried over to our game. This was evident in all players attitude to stick together playing with 9 players. Well done to all!
